A Brief Period in Time

 

1950 School of American Craftsmen moved from Alfred College to Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Rochester, NY

 

1953-1954 Shop 1 opened its doors with co-owners and craftsmen Frans Wildenhain (potter), Tage Frid (cabinetmaker),

and Jack Prip (jeweler). They were soon joined by Ronald Pearson (jeweler). At this time, the shop was managed

by Marjorie Wildenhain.

 

1954-1956 Barbara Newton Towner becomes manager.

 

1956-1958 Jocelyn Todd managed Shop 1 and later opened a shop in Aiken, SC called Cloud Seven.

 

c. 1957 Crafts Horizons magazine did a feature on Shop 1 in their magazine.

 

c.1957 Tage Frid and Jack Pripp move to Rhode Island to teach at Rhode Island School of Design.

 

1958-1960 Marina Ujlaki - manager

 

1960-1969 Elizabeth R. Tinlot was manager of Shop One. She went on to open her shop in Cambridge, MA called 10 Arrow.

 

1969 Stanley Glassman

 

1970-1975 Barbara Cowles

 

1972 Tom Markusen (metalsmith) and Wendell Castle (woodworker) join on as part owners.

 

1975-1976 Gary Smith

 

1976-1978 Rosemarie Olsen
