Superfunk is a smart, well-meaning 10-year-old who despite his wise-guy narration, is a little confused by his world. His father is a late night DJ with his own show, "Funkelations." His mother is a successful local artist, specializing in society pet portraits.
Although Superfunk struggles bravely with the handicap of his unfortunate given name, he still hasn't come to terms with it. Superfunk is a normal kid in an abnormal world.
He has a small circle of friends who, despite their own quirks, are loyal to each other. Superfunk is a typical older brother to Freaky-Dee, with periodic picking and teasing. When push comes to shove, though, he's got her back, even if that includes his patented "bunny ears."
As a 5th Grader, Superfunk is very familiar with the school milieu. Familiarity breeds contempt. He's been through a lot in his six years of public education, including the ritual mispronunciation of his name, cruel and unusual cafeteria fare, noogies, pink-bellies and Hertz Donuts.
He has an secret crush on fellow classmate Darlene Biderbeck. At least it's secret to her. His friends are quite familiar with his plight, and support his enthusiasm over the occasional eye contact or greeting from her. Once he works up the nerve to talk to her, Superfunk discovers that not only is she well versed in his favorite role-playing card game, "FreeZone," but she is also an excellent science fiction writer. They eventually collaborate, Superfunk supplying the illustrations to accompany her words.
Superfunk views his life as a tricky and dangerous game, not unlike dodge ball, one he just wants to survive. But he would never think of getting a doctor's note to get out of it. Every now and then, you catch one.
