Also a Rochester native, Barbara Cowles started as a part-time clerk at Shop One in 1963, after a background in retailing and office work. Married to potter Hobart Cowles, she learned much about the crafts and flourished in the artistic environment. She became manager of Shop One in 1970.
After leaving in 1975, Barbara continued her retailing experience at Waldenbooks. From 1981 to 1986, she owned and operated Chapter One, a bookstore in Pittsford, NY. She then did a two year stint at the Wendell Castle School in Scottsville, NY, as office manager. In 1988, she became manager and buyer for the gift Shop at the Strong Museum in Rochester.
She is now retired and living in Canandaigua, NY.
